Robotic composite machining

Our robotic cells offer great flexibility – ideal for machining complex shapes. Programming with CAD/CAM software and our user friendly HMI (human machine Interface) facilitates operation of the robotics system.

Developments in the performance of robotics systems and CAD/CAM programming software make robotic machining a highly attractive solution for advanced materials.

For complex parts, 6-axis robots offer greater accessibility than a 5-axis CNC machine. The integration of additionnal axes designed to move the robot or the part makes it possible to work on large parts with a controlled investment.

The robot’s flexibility makes it possible to produce a large number of references in small series, or even individually. The robotic machining cell can comprise multiple workstations that mask loading times and achieve high production rate. Your operators benefit from improved working conditions due to the containment of noise and dust.

Our expertise also covers robotic metal machining.

Examples of robotic composite machining applications

TRIMMING COMPOSITE POLYESTER PARTS

The part is held by vacuum cups on a wheeled trolley. The robot trims the parts on demand according to the demold pace. The trolley is indexed on a turntable that can handle large parts: 2.5m x 2.5m x 2m.

Robotics CAM software provides the programs, but these can also be learnt.

The robot is equipped with a 12KW electrospindle with automatic toolchange.

HONEYCOMB CUTTING

For honeycomb machining, the robotic cells are equipped with specific cutting tools that ensure optimum quality.

HIGH-SPEED CUTTING OF SMALL PARTS

Two robots work simultaneously on one or more parts when short cycle times are needed as in the automotive industry.

The parts are loaded onto a swinging turntable in hidden time.

Waste products are evacuated automatically in order to achieve high availability rates.

MACHINING 3D MODELS

The 6-axis robot combined with a NC turntable offers exceptional accessibility for machining complex shapes. CAD/CAM software is an essential link in the digital chain for this type of machining,

Machining masters and mock-ups with a robot is the ideal choice for soft materials such as polystyrene, polyurethane machinable slab, wood, plaster, stone, etc.

TRIMMING CARBON COMPOSITE PARTS

On high-value parts, compliance with tolerances also depends on consideration of the post-curing geometry of the part. Our robots are fitted with a mechanical touch probe or laser that measures the parts’ exact position and shape.

Trimming paths are executed after a best-fit recalibration and, on some usercase, after applying a morphing algorithm that matches the toolpath to the actual shape. This technology is particularly efficient on large, flexible parts that would otherwise require very expensive tooling.
